The Band’s Visit

April 29, 2008

I’m eager to see this Eran Kolirin debut which premiered at Cannes last year. My other greatly anticipated viewing of the term, Fellini’s 8 1/2, was a bit of a letdown, probably because my expectations were set unreasonably high (as usual). On the other hand, I loved the surrealistic and eloquently mangled El Topo. Anyway, as of now, I just wish I had more time to spare.

interesting. What would you say was your favorite part?

Well, Gravemind, there are just so many. But there’s the scene towards the end when El Topo destroys the entire village, after realizing the futility of trying to win them over with charm or compassion. And then of course, there’s the beautifully synchronized birth of his child with his own death. The film almost comes a full circle near the end, with the midget and El Topo’s sons riding into the horizon, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the film’s beginning.
